The IWG (Interoperability Working Group) was formed bythe different Space-Based Augmentation System (SBAS)service providers to ensure that SBAS systems arecompatible and to plan future enhancements. Nowadays itsmain goal is to contribute to the elaboration of a newstandard able to augment up to 4 GNSS (Global NavigationSatellite System) constellations simultaneously and offeringnew services (aviation oriented) for dual frequency (L1/L5)users. For that purpose, two families of SBAS L1/L5 ICDmodels are currently under consideration in the IWG:1. UDRE (User Differential Range Error) ICD family,aimed at defining a SBAS L1/L5 ICD model assimilar to the current SBAS L1 ICD as feasible.2. DFRE (Double Frequency Range Error) ICDfamily, whose main objective is, based upon asimilar PRN mask as L1, to simplify the number ofmessages and structure as much as possible.This paper provides a summary of the qualitative trade-offperformed between the two aforementioned ICD families inthe frame of EC PROSBAS (Prototyping and Support toStandardization of SBAS L1/L5 Multi-ConstellationReceiver) project related activities. This trade-off includes aqualitative analysis of the vertical Protection Levelperformances achieved by each alternative. Theaforementioned results have already been presented to IWGand IWG feedback has been taken into account in theanalysis.For this trade-off analysis the following strategy has beenadopted:1.Definition of Study cases2.Definition of trade-off criteria3.Definition of scenarios4.Qualitative trade-off of the ICD families5.Critical analysis of the resultsThe main results for each trade-off criterion are presented inthis paper, including a summary of the Vertical ProtectionLevel (VPL) performances achieved for optimistic, nominaland pessimistic cases, as well as for 1 to 4 constellations andwith each ICD family.Further analysis are planned to consolidate and extend thepreliminary conclusions presented in this paper. Theseactivities are part of the EC (European Commission)PROSBAS project.
