This result suggests that PGG plays an important role in preserving elastin in the tissue. Delivery of PGG NPs to mild emphysema mice model protected elastin from degradation and retained lung compliance the same as control healthy animals. This suggests PGG, when delivered locally by targeted nanoparticles, has the potential to stabilize elastin against elastases. Given its central role in the development of emphysema, preservation of elastin in lungs is a novel and potential treatment option to halt disease progression.
