The Belgian Support Programme was established in 1982. It started as a mainly facilityorientedprogramme due to the presence of many fuel cycle facilities in the region Mol-Dessel, like UO_2 and MOX fuel fabrication, waste processing, research facilities with researchreactors and a pilot reprocessing plant. The programme has evolved to more method-oriented,although the present and future facilities still play a role like the underground researchlaboratory HADES for a geological repository of high-level waste and spent fuel and the ADSdesign MYRRHA. Recent achievements are discussed briefly and the rationale for futureresearch in the framework of the Belgian Support Programme is given.
