摘要

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has been experimenting with nine panel andoverflow combination service logo signs at interchanges where the number of qualifying businessesproviding a certain service exceeds the maximum of six business logo panels per sign. A concern someexpressed with respect to nine panel signs is added driver distraction. The objective of this study was touse driving simulation to compare driver performance between nine panel, overflow combination, and sixpanel logo signs in specific service detection. Twenty-four participants were asked to search for a targetfood business logo panel as they drove in the simulator. The dependent variables measured includedsignal detection, response time, average speed, lane deviation, speeding percentage, off-road glancepercentage, and maximum off-road glance duration. Based on results, it is suggested that highwayagencies can use overflow combination or nine panel logo signs, where there are more than six qualifyingbusinesses in a category at an interchange, without negative implications for driver performance.
