Investigation of the Early-onset Breakdown Phenomenon at Urban Expressway Bottlenecks in Shanghai

Based on the analyses of recurring bottlenecks in Shanghai's expressways s usingspatial-temporal diagrams, two typical isolated bottlenecks (a lane drop and an on-ramp) wereselected and the method of transformed curves was used to investigate the traffic flowcharacteristics revealed by loop detector data. The pre-queue flow (PQF) and queue dischargeflow (QDF) of the two bottlenecks were analyzed. It was discovered that QDF was higher thanPQF in the lane-drop and on-ramp bottlenecks, the average difference were 18% and 27%respectively. These findings differ from the results of diverse bottlenecks in other countries (e.g.M4 motorway near London, United Kingdom, I-494 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, the QueenElizabeth Way (QEW) and the Gardiner Expressway in metropolitan Toronto, Canada), andindicate the lane-drop and on-ramp bottlenecks in Shanghai experience an early-onset of trafficbreakdown. Finally, the potential causes of this early-onset of breakdown were discussed from theaspects of driving behavior, the temporal features of flow rate and the features of merging.
