摘要

Traditional mountains-and-waters gardens have provided great resources and ideas in designing urban public squares with Chinese characteristics. However, the traditions of Chinese gardens are only continued mostly in landscaping details of the squares.Instead of thorough understanding of the spatial art of traditional gardens, modern public squares simply extracted specific physical elements from the traditions. With Dujiangyan Water Cultural Square, designed after the traumatic earthquake in 2008 as the case, from the perspectives of spatial layout, spatial boundaries, route and sight design and others, this paper will explore a new pathway of continuation and innovation of Chinese garden spatial traditions in modern squares.
