摘要

Most empirical tests show positive relationship between urbanization and carbon emissions;however, urbanization helps migrators make the transition to a low-carbon lifestyle and thus may contribute to emissions reduction.This paper analyzes the impact of urbanization on CO2 emissions in 66 developing countries from 1990 to 2009, applying both static and dynamic techniques.It sheds further light on the existing literature by examining the effect of urbanization, taking into account the development of megacities and spatial expansion of non-agricultural land.The results show that urbanization contributes reduction in CO2 emissions for developing countries;however, this abatement effect is most evident for upper middle countries.Moreover, the impact of megacity and the expansion of non-agricultural land on CO2 emissions are different from country to country.The development of megacities results in more CO2 emissions in low income countries where as the expansion of non-agricultural land is negative related in countries from upper and lower middle income group.The differential impact of urbanization on CO2 emissions and its dynamic features should therefore be paid special attention in future discussions of energy policies and urban planning.
