摘要

The idea of a „Danube-European Conference on Soil Mechanics" was primarily borne when Prof. Karl Terzaghi had passed away on October, 25th 1963. He had been Full Professor for Soil Mechanics at the Vienna University of Technology (1929 - 1938) and worked repeatedly in Eastern and South Eastern Europe. Moreover, "Soil Mechanics Experts", as they were called at that time, had been strongly influenced by K. Terzaghi's work, and many had been students our assistants of K. Terzaghi - from Germany to Turkey. Now, in the year 1964 the Austrian Society of Engineers and Architects (OEIAV), founded already in 1848, aimed at bringing together the geotechnical colleagues from East and West by overcoming the barrier of the "Iron Curtain". The Danube-Region (including the hydrological catchment area - Figs. 1, 4) from Germany to the Black Sea had been connected since Roman times by close cultural, economic and personal relations. Hence, the vision of the OEIAV in 1964 was at least a mental and cultural reunification of this great region, which had been in a geopolitically exposed situation since antiquity: The border between the Eastern and Western Roman Empire run there, the border between the Franconian and Byzantine Empire, the frontiers between Christianity/East and West and the Islamic World - and, the latest, the "Iron Curtain", separating Europe during the "Cold War" into an Eastern and Western Bloc (1945- 1989/1990).
