摘要

Quilombolas are descendants from black slaves who escaped from slaveryin Brazil and founded isolated communities, the Quilombos. Many of these have lots ofneeds towards housing, scholarity and sanitation. The sanitation, including solid waste, affects their health, which is very concerning and requires studies in the area. So thiswork studies the current conditions of solid waste management in two quilombolacommunities, one urban and the other rural, starting from site visits, questionnairesapplied to the samples and gravimetric analysis. Thereby it was possible to notice thatthe urban community has better conditions than the rural, and their 66% of organicmatter and 17% of plastics and paper are equivalents to the gravimetric composition ofthe city it’s inserted. In the rural community, almost 90% of plastics and papers areburnt in the ground and 100% of organic matter originated from food is destined todomestic animals and used as fertilizer, and that’s why they had the highest generationof plastics and glass. In conclusion, the conditions of these communities depends on theurban context they are inserted, in other words, the rural community has more issuesthan the urban.
