Dry-type subtransmission transformer: compact and safe indoor substations

Dry-type transformers are usually only available for distribution applications for voltages up to 36 kV. The development of a dry-type transformer for the 72.5 kV voltage class, the related development activities, dielectric simulations, and the results of qualification testing have already been reported at previous CIGRE and other events.The dry-type transformers offer the same functionality as liquid-immersed transformers. The super-iority of dry-type transformers with respect to safety for people, property and the environment makes them the ideal choice for installations in urban substations, substations located close to or in public or private buildings, like e.g. hospitals or datacenters, underground substations, installations in caverns, power generation plants, water protection areas and for areas with increased fire risk or for mobile substations. It is possible now to use new concepts for indoor substations without the need for costly protection means and excluding the residual risks related to liquid-filled transformers. Inner city areas can easily be supplied at higher voltage, allowing to provide higher power density and reducing the energy losses on the transmission to the city substations.Production and delivery of a number of dry-type transformers for subtransmission has meanwhile taken place. We present in the paper a number of different realized or planned configurations for indoor and outdoor installations, the related components, and the experience gathered while installing the transformers and taking them into operation. A 69 kV/25 MVA indoor substation installation in a sports stadium in Brazil and a 45 kV/16 MVA outdoor installation in Sweden are presented in detail. In both cases the transformers are equipped with a dry-type on-load tap changer, offering a total regulation range of 20%.Combining dry-type transformers with gas-insulated or hybrid gas-insulated switchgear allows very compact and safe indoor substations. Such installations can be placed in the basement of any building. Conceptual outlines are presented in the paper.Fire and explosion safety is key for such installations. Dry-type transformers of F1 fire class fulfill these requirements and are self-extinguishing. The paper describes why this is the case.
