The possible utilization of highly calcined purge material derived from the Calcium-Looping process for in-situ desulfurization in coal-fired fluidized bed boilers was investigated experimentally in a pilot scale CFB at IFK, Stuttgart. Consistent desulfurization experiments under real CFBC conditions for both sorbents were successfully established by stable facility operation and the management of a steady bed composition. The desulphurization performance was analyzed by means of the sulfur capture efficiency and the bed ash composition. The sulfur capture performance of CaL purge was found to be significantly poorer at a given Ca/S molar ratios. This performance loss must be caused by the particle structure transformations along with the deactivation during CaL operation. Hence, larger streams of purge material would be necessary in order to reach efficient desulfurization in fluidized bed combustion chambers.
