Dynamic Fragility of a Polymer Glass-Former by Differential Scanning Calorimetry

The dynamic fragility (m) of polysulfone (PSF) is reported to be 141 by birefringence and 149 by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS). However, recent studies have reported polysulfone dynamic fragility values of 124 ± 20 and 286 ± 25 for commercially received and after a washing/precipitation treatment, respectively. In the current work, the dynamic fragilities of polysulfone (PSF) as received and after wash-precipitation are measured using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The dynamic fragility was obtained by using the obtained fictive temperatures after cooling at different rates followed by a constant heating rate. The results from the current study are compared with previously reported literature polysulfone dynamic fragility data.
