Fundamental to economic operation are the fuel characteristics of thermal units. A recent trend is to use gas fuels from multiple sources. The change in calorific value of the fuel mix adds to the dynamic nature of these characteristics, and to be most economic, need to be determined at the instant of dispatch calculations. This research describes a technique for collection of data in a database system suitable for thermal power stations and an algorithm has been developed for deriving the fuel cost characteristics of units at the time of dispatch. This adds another dimension to the already dynamic nature of incremental fuel cost characteristics.
