The US power industry is continuously re-inventing itself. Beginning with roughly 180,000 MW of capacity in the first half of the 20th Century, to over five times that at the end. Both the technology for energy conversion technology (Brayton/Rankine cycle) and the energy source (coal, oil, gas, nuclear, renewables) have shifted. The US (and Canada) will likely be the largest producer of hydrocarbons in the world. The US already exceeds Saudi Arabia in liquids hydrocarbon production. The power sector is the third largest consumer of natural gas in the United States, and will likely be the most utilized component in the power generation portfolio. This sector is probably the only sector that can accommodate the large volume of gas production expected.
