摘要

The State of Kansas has approximately 25,464 bridges located on state, county, and city roadwaynetworks. As of May 2012 approximately 1,229 bridges on very low volume roads weredetermined to be structurally deficient and candidate structures to be potentially closed, replacedor repaired. This study was designed to provide critical information for county commissioners orpracticing engineers, such as: (1) where structurally deficient or functionally obsolete bridges onlow volume roads are located; (2) what distance is the shortest drivable detour if these bridgeswere to be closed; and (3) whether to recommend closing or repair/replace the structurallydeficient bridge based on both potential detour length and Average Daily Traffic (ADT). Theresults of the study indicated that many of the structurally deficient bridges on very low volumeroadways had detours of two or fewer miles, were steel bridges, and had ADTs of under eightvehicles. Based on the analysis, bridge closure was recommended for a low volume roadway wasan ADT less than 8 and a detour length less than 9 miles.
