Mery-sur-Oise drinking water treatment plant (DWTP), located in the suburbs of Paris (France) and operated by Veolia Water on behalf of the SEDIF (Syndicat des Eaux d'IIe de France), treats surface water through two parallel process paths, a conventional biological path and a nanofiltration (NF) path. The NF path (global capacity: 37 MGD) was implemented in 1999, increasing the facility global capacity to 90 MGD, after the mixing of waters. Its purpose also was to improve the water quality by lowering its hardness, its natural organic matter concentration and its micropollutants amount. The start-up of this large NF unit was a real challenge at that time, and it is now possible, after 10 years of operation (total water production of 0.4 billion m~3!), to present a feedback.rnThe NF unit is composed of 8 identical trains, each including 3 successive stages, and contains 9120 8-inch NF200B (Dow Chemical Company) spiral-wound elements. NF200B was specifically developed to reject pesticides and Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) but allow calcium to pass partially. Membranes were initially designed for a 5 year life expectancy but, as their performances were stable, they were renewed after 10 years of operation. The longevity and efficiency of the NF plant is due to the process design, able to control fouling thanks to an optimized pre-treatment and an adequate membrane Cleaning In Place (CIP) system.rnPre-treatment is composed of water storage, pH regulation at 6.9, Actiflo? weighted floes lamellar settlement, ozonation, inline coagulant injection, dual layer filtration (anthracite/sand), antiscalant addition and absolute 6 μm pre-filtration. CIP are conducted periodically every 6 weeks and consist in the soaking and recirculation of a basic/detergent phase followed by a citric acid solution.rnDuring the 10 years of operation, membranes kept their selectivity so water quality objectives were fully achieved: TOC reduction up to 95%, micropollutants removal (no pesticide ever found in NF permeate among 30 searched) and calcium reduction (rejection between 20 and 55 % according to the temperature).rnHydraulic performances were more sustained than initially expected. After 10 years Kw (water permeability at 25℃ corrected from the osmotic pressure) had only decreased by 25 %, from 6 to 4.5 L/(h.m~2.bar), while ?P_(fc) (longitudinal pressure drop between the feed side and the concentrate side) presented relatively moderate increases by 140%, 60% and 180% respectively for stages 1, 2 and 3.rnThus preventive (pre-treatment) and corrective (CIP) actions carried out to control fouling were able to sustain membrane rejections and hydraulic performances, which allowed the operator to extend the membrane life from 5 to 10 years without operation and maintenance extra costs expand.rnIn 2008 and 2009 membranes were replaced train after train while maintaining the water production. The operation was a success and the NF unit has now been working with new membranes since August 2009.
