Finding Solutions to Address Diversity and Defense-In-Depth For IC Safety Systems

The NRC requirements for addressing the potential for common cause software errors in safety-related digital instrumentation and control (I&C) systems have created many challenges for the nuclear industry and for many plants have been an obstacle to performing upgrades of their aging protection systems. As a consequence, licensees are having difficulty maintaining performance levels of these important systems. Have digital I&C technologies advanced to the point where these concerns can be addressed in a reasonable manner without incurring significant project risks? This paper explores several of the latest technologies being employed in nuclear power plants and examines their capabilities for addressing the requirements for diversity and defense-in-depth without introducing new hazards to the plant. This paper includes a comparative analysis of several design concepts and identifies how these concepts can be used to meet NRC diversity criteria.
