A Rule-Based Signal Compensation Strategy for the Non-Bus-Priority Approaches at an Intersection

Signal compensation strategies for non-bus-priority approaches focus on reducing the side-effects on the non-bus-priority approaches caused by transit signal priority control. The objective is to maintain the level of service of non-bus-priority approaches at an acceptable level and increase overall traffic throughputs at the entire intersection. A rule-based signal compensation strategy for non-priority approaches is introduced to provide proper conditional signal priorities, which will increase the efficiency of traffic signal control. A new approach for monitoring traffic conditions is also proposed to visualize the parameters of traffic flows at intersections and along corridor by radar graph. This paper firstly analyzed traffic conditions at signalized intersections and the simulation results from the signal timing compensation strategy. Then, two case studies are conducted based on a hypothetical intersection and a real road intersection in Beijing, respectively. The VISSIM-based micro-simulation focuses on the impacts of signal compensation strategies for the non-bus-priority approaches.
