摘要

Shock wave propagation in granular media is one of fundamental research topics of shock wave dynamics. However, shock wave loading in quartz sand layers resulting in the compression or fragmentation of quartz grains, unlike inert granular media, exhibits piezo-effect at compression wave fronts typically accompanying luminosity, which may be equivalent to real gas effects in hypersonic flows. The authors have been working on high-speed impact of projectiles into quartz sand layers and then observed the propagation of luminous fronts in association with a penetrating projectile.
