A new BOS method using periodic brightness patterns as the background screen of the BOS system is introduced. The data processing of the method is much faster than that of the ordinary BOS with a random-dots background. The problem of phase inversion that characterizes this method is circumvented by introducing a background pattern synthesized from two periodic patterns with different frequencies.This new technique was applied to visualization of thermal convection and underexpanded free jet and the usefulness of the method was confirmed.
