The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) initiated three (3) correctivemaintenance repair projects in the New York City region on a total of 132 bridges, with theobjective of seeking cost effective improvement in the overall bridge conditions and thuspreserving the region’s bridge population in a State of Good Repair (SOGR). These projectswere in line with NYSDOT’s guiding principles for infrastructure investment. Using bestpractices of asset management in strategic, systematic and risk based selection criteria forbridges, developing performance measures, relating cost with condition ratings, and forecastingfuture condition, these projects demonstrate cost effectiveness of preservation over majorrehabilitation.
