Construction is underway to replace the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge that crosses the Piscataqua Riverbetween Kittery, Maine and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. This project has used the Construction Manager /General Contractor (CM/GC) contract delivery method. The new crossing includes vehicular approach bridgesover railroad approach bridges consisting of precast segmental concrete box girders constructed by the balancedcantilever method. The approach bridges lead to a movable lift span bridge over the navigation channel. Bridgesubstructure units consist of cast-in-place reinforced concrete approach bridge piers founded on a combination ofspread footings and drilled shafts along with precast concrete lift span towers constructed on drilled shaftfoundations.
