Smartphones have not only become pervasive, but they will continue evolving in the future. Mobile communications will thus continue to be an area of tremendous research activity, where well-trained professionals will have to address the challenges of such a demanding market. With a background of more than ten years in mobile communications, and based on the insights gained from the Fed4FIRE PerformLTE testbed, the authors have realized the high potential of mobile test equipment not only in the research field but also for educational purposes. In this paper we propose the application of the UXM wireless test set as a pivotal component in a mobile communications engineering learning and research curriculum.
