Power system transient stability investigation in the presence of photovoltaic generation

-The expanding installation of photovoltaic (PV) resources into power systems continue to grow which affects both structural and dynamics of power systems. The effects of largescale grid-connected PV on the stability of power systems becomes a serious concern, because of the different dynamic behaviour of the power system with a considered portion of inertialess of the PV based systems. This paper investigates the impact of increased penetration of PV power plant on system transient stability. The dynamic responses of a detailed model of large-scale PV systems when subjected to a three phase fault were compared directly to the transient behaviour of a conventional synchronous generator. The responses of the PV system during stressed operating conditions is evaluated using the New England 10machine 39-bus test system, where units a reasonable P-V system replaces conventional generation.The investigation shows that the PV system has a significant impact on rotor angle behaviour because of its influence on the rotating inertia during the disturbances.
