Transient modeling of stator winding inter-turn short-circuits in induction motors

Induction motors plays very important part in the safe and efficient running of any industrial plant. Early detection of abnormalities in the motor would help to avoid costly breakdown. Accordingly, this paper presents an accurate mathematical model for diagnosis of stator winding faults in induction motors. This model is based on the d,q axis theory, and valid for both the transient and steady-state conditions. The proposed analysis is tested for incident faults and the 3-phase motor currents are recorded using a digital signal processing (DSP). Since the stator turn-to-turn shorts are one of the more prevalent and potentially destructive electrical faults in induction motors, a turn-to-turn fault is considered in such a study. An experimental motor is implemented and the fault is applied at typical percentages of a single phase stator winding. A reasonably close agreement between the measured and simulated results have been observed, which supports the validity of the proposed analysis.
