This paper presents a high speed time-based serial link interface. The proposed link combines the pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) technique with the pulse-position modulation (PPM) technique in order to increase the number of the transmitted data bits. The receiver side of the proposed link uses a time-based recovery technique which enhances the number of the amplitude modulation bits. Also, it reduces the complexity of the designed link and reduces the power consumption compared with the other related work. A 5 bits 4-Gb/s PAM-PPM serial link interface has been designed and simulated in 130 nm CMOS technology using 800 MHz input clock signal. The total power consumption of the designed link is less than 60 mW.
