Choosing the proper equipment and sizing it correctly are critical steps in any plant modernization or upgrade. While steady-state calculations are adequate in determining the necessary equipment size or capacity, inherently dynamic specifications, such as actuator speeds or fan blade movement, directly affect plant time constants and require more careful consideration. Interactions between existing and new equipment must also be examined. In a large, modern power plant, these types of equipment specifications are of critical importance during transient events such as master fuel trips, draft fan trips, and turbine trips. By utilizing high fidelity simulation, the impact of these design decisions on the dynamic behavior of the plant can be accurately predicted. This paper will discuss how simulation can be used to predict plant behavior and refine equipment selection. Implementing recommendations from such simulation studies can prevent undesirable or dangerous plant conditions, especially during abnormal transient events, and will provide benefits in terms of prolonged equipment life, plant efficiency, and plant safety.
