A temporary excavation required to construct a new lift station was designed for a 32 ft maximum height at 3H to 2V with multiple benches. As a result of the design analysis, the calculated FOS for the effective stress and fully softened conditions did not meet the minimum required. Given the uncertainty in the degree of saturation, pore pressure dissipation, and seasonal wet/dry cycles, our firm required performance monitoring to evaluate the stability of the excavation during the 6-8 week construction period. The excavation was backfilled after 8 weeks without observable global failure distress features. This performance likely was because the clayey soils were not fully saturated and therefore the in-situ shear strength of the soils was higher than estimated due to negative pore pressure. The authors completed an as-built analysis which is presented here; the in-situ apparent shear strength of the soils was back-calculated to evaluate the quantitative contribution of the unsaturated soil effects.
