Characterization of Mine Waste Materials after 50 Years of Climate Interaction

This paper presents the results from of a set of in situ and laboratory tests performed in order to characterize the tailings of an abandoned tailings dam of the Castano Viejo mine, which is located at the eastern foothills of the central Andes mountain range, an arid and seismically active area. The tailings dam has been abandoned since 1964, and no reclamation or closure works of any nature have been performed up to date. The in situ research program comprised the excavation of several bore holes, in order to investigate the internal structure of the impoundment and to collect bulk samples for the later laboratory characterization. Standard penetrations tests (SPT) were also performed at the boring sites. Several test pits were excavated, where logging of the texture and recollection of intact samples were carried out. The in situ testing program also included bulk density determinations and permeability tests at different depths. Laboratory characterization program comprised the determination of the grain size distribution curves, plasticity index, soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) among other. Regarding mechanical testing, consolidated-undrained with pore pressure measurement (CU) triaxial, direct shear, and Oedometer tests were performed.
