We put forward a methodology, called as role-oriented designing, to design a customized professional social robot from the point view of its different roles playing in a certain situation. In this paper, we present the detail methods of the designing and a designing case for the appearance and interaction ways of a customized professional social robot. Under the guidance of the method, we have developed a robot Caibao, working as a receptionist in a Financial Affairs Office of University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. The methodology aims to give a designing standard for he appearance and interaction ways, in terms of social attributes oriented to the roles of social robots. The more precisely social robots can interpret their social attributes, the more popular they are like best actors in movies.
