This paper presents a design of an adaptive nonlinear multivariable (MIMO) controller for a wind energy conversion system which includes a battery-storage unit. The system can be either operated in grid-connected mode or stand-alone mode. The power grid and the load parameters are assumed unknown. The controller includes an adaptation module that automatically adjusts its parameters when the grid or the load parameters change. A multivariable feedback linearization control design scheme is adopted as design method. The proposed control system is evaluated in simulation. The results show that the load voltage is maintained constant and the power management between the wind-turbine, the battery, the grid and the load is performed regardless of changes in the system operating condition.
