Modeling Waiting Endurance Time of E-Bike at Signalized Intersection

The waiting endurance time (WET) is an important parameter that is used to analyze the electric bicycle (e-bike) rider's unsafe crossing behavior. That is also one of the constraints of signal control at intersections. This paper presents a survival analysis method for investigating e-bike riders' WET at signalized intersections. The real-time video data of e-bike riders is collected by the "Global Eye" technology of China Telecom. In this survey, a total of 10,795 e-bike riders' WET samples were observed in Ningbo, China, including 7,541 samples and 3,344 samples approaching the intersections during red-light periods and green-light periods, respectively. The results show that several contributing factors, including travel time, weather, red-light periods, crosswalk length, and land-use, are found to have significant impacts on waiting endurance time of e-bikes. It is also found that about half of the observed e-bike riders cannot endure 46.45 seconds, and only 25% of the e-bike riders can endure 66 seconds or longer. The results can enhance our understanding of the factors that affect e-bike riders' WET and can help develop intervention strategies for improving traffic signal control at signalized intersections.
