Optimization of One-Way Traffic Organization in the Old City: A Case Study in Nanqiao New Town

With the demand for motorized transportation significantly heightened in recent years, the contradiction between supply and demand of traffic in the old city is becoming more and more prominent. One-way traffic design is an effective approach to relieve urban congestion, which can be used to channel old city traffic. Taking the Nanqiao New Town in Fengxian District of Shanghai as an example, the data of "two vertical and four horizontal" road networks are investigated and three unidirectional traffic plans are developed. The optimal one-way solution is selected by evaluation of traffic impact analysis and Synchro simulation. The results show that the traffic capacity of the road can be noticeably improved, the service level of the intersection can be ameliorated, and the traffic congestion can be alleviated. This research summarizes the work of the one-way traffic organization design of Nanqiao New City, which can be used as reference for other old city road designs.
