摘要

An accurate analysis of the traffic congestion formation mechanism is the basis of identifying congestion, formulating a plan to alleviate congestion, and improving traffic network management. In this paper, we review a host of research from the aspects of formation and recognition and analyze a multitude of studies using traffic flow theory, complex network theory, kinetic theory, and traffic engineering theory to explore the formation and regular evolution of congestion. Our research results show that with the rapid development of advanced traveler information systems (ATIS), the formation of traffic congestion lacks exploring for traffic flow dynamic change in the traffic information. Importantly, recognition and prediction need to consider not only the operational characteristics of congestion but also integrate traffic volume composition and the role of the road network. In conclusion, we propose the trend of the development and the direction of our efforts.
