Voltage source inverter (VSI) and current source inverter (CSI) have been used as the main power converters for many years. However (VSI) and (CSI) have a limited voltage gain. The growth of renewable energy usage increases the need to improve wide gain range power converters. Impedance source inverter (ZSI) has been introduced to limit the drawbacks of traditional inverters. (ZSI) has the ability of buck, boost and inversion in a single stage construction without increasing the number of active switches with the privilege of simple control methods. Nevertheless, (ZSI) suffers from many drawbacks such as high voltage stresses, non-linear relations and large size impedance network. Since it was introduced, many researchers have given their focus to improve (ZSI) by filling those gaps. In this paper a comprehensive survey of (ZSI) topology improvements for various applications is carried out with a discussion of the basic operation of (ZSI) and its PWM control methods.
