Breakdown strength and stability of oil-based magnetic nanofluids

Oil-based nanofluids have attracted a great interest in recent years due to their enhanced thermal and dielectric properties. However, there is a lack in studies dealing with the stability of oil-based nanofluids. Accordingly, this paper investigates the suitable composition of oil-based nanofluids considering both BD strength and stability. Magnetic nanofluids are considered in this study. Nanofluids are prepared using the two-step method with three different concentrations of nanoparticles and three different percentages of surfactant for each concentration. BD voltage is measured using an oil tester and stability is assessed using ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy. Weibull distribution is used to analysis breakdown measurements. Based on the obtained results, the physical mechanisms are illustrated and the suitable composition is adopted.
