This paper introduces fault detection techniques for the HVDC-VSC (High Voltage Direct Current-Voltage Source Converter) units based on monitoring at the AC side. Depending on the AC voltage signals, two different criteria are presented for detecting AC and DC faults respectively. With Park transformation, the response of the AC voltage components in d-q reference frame is investigated under both AC and DC faults. DC faults could be detected using the AC quantities because of the reflected impacts of dc disturbances on the AC side. The presented techniques are studied with the converters operated with both constant-power and constant-dc-voltage control modes. The obtained results depict how the condition of the converter unit could be determined based on monitoring at the AC side.
