This paper attempts to review the physico-chemical processes possibly governing the vibrational temperatures of CO_2 and its subsequent infrared radiative properties under non-equilibrium. Within the multi-temperature formalism, this paper addresses the uncertainty in the vibration-vibration and vibration-translation relaxation times data and the modeling of the energy exchange source terms. A new dissociation nonequilibrium factor model, which takes into account the three vibrational temperatures, is also developed. The effect of CO_2 rovibrational level energy splitting scheme on the heat capacities is then discussed. Collision integral models are also compared and their influence on the convective heating is highlighted. Finally, radiation enhancement by vibrational nonequilibrium is presented.
