Flow Evaluation of the Lobe Pump Using Numerical Methods

In this scientific paper, numerical simulations were performed to determine the performance of a lobe pump. The analyzes were made using CFD commercial software Ansys CFX. Using the URANS method with the SST turbulence model, the system of equations governing the flow of fluid through the lobe pump has been solved. The system of equations is represented by the Navier-Stokes equations composed of the continuity, impulse and energy equations. Considering that this type of machine is a positive displacement volumetric machine for defining the computational domain for rotating parts, the TwinMesh software were used which can make structured grids for different rotor positions. Thus, two cases where examined in which the discharge pressure was imposed. In the first case the discharge absolute pressure were 1,5 bars and for the second case the absolute pressure at the outlet were 1,7 bars. The investigation resulted in the following findings: the mass flow variations on a complete rotation and the recirculation regions with the flow detachments imposed by the positions of the two rotors.
