In wireless sensor network, clustering-based data gathering is an important approach for achieving energy efficiency. In the existing clustering algorithm, either cluster heads are selected in each round or after a fixed number of rounds of data collection. Selection of cluster head in each round causes more communication overhead in the network. However, selection of cluster head after a fixed number of rounds causes premature death of overloaded cluster head and unbalanced energy consumption among the nodes. In order to solve premature death of cluster head as well as unbalanced energy consumption, this paper proposes a Grid-based multi-clustering protocol using sugeno fuzzy inference system. Performance evaluation of the proposed protocol and its comparison with the three well-known clustering protocols are presented in detail.
