These findings indicate that as smooth muscle cells calcified, the stiffness and modulus increase; therefore, making the cell more firm. In clinical settings, this will lead to stiffening of the arteries. This confirms that our in vitro model alters mechanical properties of calcified smooth muscle cells. Future Works: Our research group is also examining the use of protein based inhibitors to decalcify the cells. Once the cell is calcified, the affect on stiffness and modulus will be observed through the use of AFM.
