Catalytic Dissociation of Ammonia for Hydrogen Production: A Review

This review critically examines the current knowledge and state of technology development of NH3 dissociation catalysts for H_2 production. Monometallic catalysts based on ruthenium, nickel, cobalt and iron and bimetallic catalysts are first reviewed. The effects of catalyst preparation method, support, promoter and reaction conditions on the performance of these catalysts are examined and compared. Bimetallic catalysts, such as combined cobalt and iron catalysts, which offer more robust catalytic performance over diverse ranges of operating conditions, are then considered, with a view to identifying opportunities for expedited development of new and relevant NH3 dissociation catalysts. Furthermore, membrane-catalyst systems suitable for integrating NH3 dissociation with in situ N2/H2 separation are also examined. Various types of membrane including dense metallic, dense ceramic and microporous carbon are evaluated in an effort to identify suitable candidates for such an integrated system. Finally, a set of research trends and development needs are identified and presented.
