Water and Wastewater Management in Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Power Plants

Combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plants have emerged as a leader in energy production due to low natural gas prices and rapid startups that will bridge the gap between energy supply and demand during fluctuations in renewable energy production. CCGT power plants tend to utilize large amounts of water for cooling and steam generation. Water regulations in the United States have become increasingly stringent in recent years. At the same time water resources become scarcer, new plant developers are looking for innovative ways to minimize water use and discharge volumes. This has driven an increased interest in reusing water within new CCGT power plants. This paper reviews water/wastewater reuse and recycle scenarios that are applied to new construction of CCGT plants. The engineered equipment costs, water consumption, water discharge, and water quality are reviewed from an engineering standpoint.
