摘要

Data and resource limitations can limit the ability to fully calibrate nutrient models in many settings. A Water Research Foundation project team has developed a process and tool for applying screening-level models in stream and small river settings. The process can help identify which treatment tiers would represent "diminishing returns" for stream responses, or where additional control of one nutrient (e.g., nitrogen) would have no additional environmental benefits over more moderate treatment tiers. The screening process can also be applied in a conservative fashion to explore the limits of stream responses to management. The process and tool is being tested in three different stream settings for which calibrated/ corroborated nutrient response models already exist. Outcomes of the project will include documented results of the demonstration and a nutrient screening tool that can be applied in general stream settings.
