Today, the opportunities for biosolids resource recovery are unprecedented - and growing -fueled by continued technical innovation and a global focus on sustainability. These opportunities, and the drivers behind them, are fully explored the 2017 Water Environment Federation (WEF) report Accelerating Resource Recovery: Biosolids Innovations and Opportunities. The new report updates WEF's 2013 Enabling the Future: Advancing Resource Recovery from Biosolids, and specifically examines recent changes in regulatory, technology, and funding landscapes impacting the recovery of organics, energy and nutrients in biosolids. This paper summarizes regulatory and policy discussion in the report, supplemented by more recent developments that have occurred since the report was published, providing a comprehensive overview of how these issues are shaping resource recovery.
