Estimation of In-Flight Vibration Loads for Overall Structure Using Modal Survey and Operational Data from Limited Locations

In the design development phase of engineering structures, operational vibration measurements from many locations are very important. However, for most cases it is impractical and even impossible to instrument a structure with sensors at many locations. An alternative method is to estimate the vibration environment of the structure by utilizing frequency response function set of the structure from all points of interest and measurement from limited locations. To obtain the frequency response function set for the estimation purposes, a careful modal survey study of the structure in the operational conditions should be conducted carefully. After this step, using proper functions from the modal survey and the power spectral density of the operational data, the input force power spectral density curve is constructed. Then the vibration environment of any location of the structure can be estimated using the constructed input force data and the relevant frequency response function. In order to check the effectiveness of the methodology, a simulated experiment is designed to replicate in flight vibration loads. In the experiment, from one of the measured power spectral density data another one is estimated using the proposed methodology. The estimated acceleration data curve is compared with the measured one from the estimation location and a good agreement is achieved between the estimation and the measurement.
