A visually impaired person relies on a white cane to detect obstacles in their environment for assistance in movement. Different cane techniques have been developed and incorporated in orientation and mobility practice to help visually impaired individuals travel independently. Various electronic devices are also available to assist visually impaired individuals further. However, many of them require additional learning and adaptation. This study presents a design concept and a working prototype utilizing ultrasound sensing technologies to extend the detecting range of a white cane based on currently established cane techniques.
