The steel structures of overhead travelling cranes and portal bridge cranes are voluminous and complex, making it difficult to quickly test the safety and integrity. Acoustic emission (AE) technology is an effective tool for Structure Health Monitoring of cranes. AE characteristics of the steel structures of cranes, including attenuation curves, signal characteristics of crack and deformation, were obtained in lab studies. Combined with a large number of field tests, the AE testing standard of cranes was developed. The filed application of an overhead travelling crane was shown and the testing results were evaluated using the ISO standard.
