Numerical solutions of an electrostatic contour value problem in heterogeneous media are obtained using local differential quadrature method. In order to do this, multiquadrics functions – a case of radial basis functions – are employed as test functions. Two approaches are studied: in the first one, the shape parameter of the multiquadrics functions is kept fixed and, in the second one, the shape parameter is variable, assuming larger values close to the interface. The solutions yielded by these approaches are compared with the exact solution and it is found that the best results are obtained using variable shape parameters.
