Low length to diameter (L/D) ratio shaped charge, having L/D ratio in order of 1.0-1.1, can be designed to achieve comparable penetration performance to conventional shaped charges having L/D ratio in order of 1.3 to 1.6. The design includes suitable combination of liner configuration and waveshaper geometry to get desired penetration. Due to dimensional restrictions, waveshaper is positioned very close to liner causing sensitive variation of liner collapse angle, jet velocity and velocity gradient. Selection of liner and waveshaper location results in effective shaped charge even with reduced dimensions and explosive weight. A design of 115 mm diameter shaped charge has been discussed to highlight issues related with design of low L/D shaped charge warheads. One dimensional PER theory along with two-dimensional hydrocode simulation tools were used for analysis.
